Food

*After a food posting on my photoblog… yet another post about food. arhh fat fat…

Ever find yourself craving for asam pedas fish? Last two days, I had this longing for fish again… especially with that lovely asam pedas gravy. What more, again, me, Debbie and sayng headed to ‘Asam Pedas Puteri’ located at Batu Berendam. I claim it as the best asam pedas and sambal fish in Melaka.

This is the place we kinda frequent whenever we look for this dish. There are several places available in town that also serve the similar dish. But honestly, they simply couldn’t beat Puteri’s. Those places usually had their fish prepared. When you order they just need to scoop it out and serve. And if they’re not finish selling, they might keep it for the nect day. But at Puteri’s, fishes are fresh and you can choose from the fridge before they cook it. That ensures the freshness and excellent temperature of the dish while serving. The gravy tastes just nice, not overly hot or sour and it managed to open my appetite by just looking at it…

Ikan Pari (Stingray) used to be our favourite choice to go with asam pedas. Sometimes we go for other choices too, such as Ikan Jenahak (Snapper) or Ikan Kut that also belongs to the snapper family. Of course, other choices like Ikan Parang, Ikan Kembong, Ikan Bawal (Pomfret) and etc also available over this place subject to availability.

Ikan Pari asam pedas. Freshly served & steaming hot!

Other than fishes in asam pedas (ikan masak asam), Puteri’s also offers fishes in sambal (ikan masak sambal). This is also one of the must try in Puteri’s. Fish is firstly deep-fried before cooking together with their homemade special sambal with some sliced onion. Hmmpphh… fantabulously delicious! Other than fishes in sambal, veggies such as bendih (lady’s finger), kobis (cabbage) in sambal also can be found here. And of course, it is subject to availability and you’ll need to check with the person who take your order.

Ikan Pari masak sambal - Yummylicious!

With all these great dishes on the table, you can never resist to add more rice (at least one more plate shared by 2 persons) to make the whole meal more worthwhile. Hmm… stomach bloated la…

Errrhhh…! What a lovely meal. Ehee…

Last two days I was empty-stomach when I reached home. And it wasn’t dinner time yet… and Mom was still cokking. So… I head to the fridge. While I was checking it out trying to search for something to chew on, I found this thing that rose my eyebrow…

It claimed itself snack… so means can just eat like that la…

I check with Mom, she said that was the thing she used to make the soup (which I said very nice) few days back. Brother actually bought it back. I was like - awh, make soup? It looked so different then! But I didn’t give it much thought… I just took out one. The surface looked as though it was very hard. Actually not so… You can actually just pop it into your mouth and chew it; or slowly open it and eat it bit by bit.

See its inside? If you eat dragon fruit before, then imagine 10 times or more small seeds inside your mouth. They taste a lil’ bit sweet, with that lil’ bit sticky texture. As a whole, it makes you feel healthy chewing this snacks - yeah like it’s said on the label.

Since it didn’t state what’s the name, I turned to the back of the package and I saw it written “Sundried figs”. Not knowing what’s figs, I check it our from my thick oxford advanced learners english-chinese dictionary. And it’s actually called 无花果. Ooohh…..

I was pretty happy enjoying the snacks, ended up jalan masuk satu buji, keluar pun satu biji… Eventually, “喂你不要把它全部吃完啊!你懂不懂这个东西很贵的,一包一点点要整十多块,我还要拿来煮汤的啊!”

Read about this from him in the last weeks, and really, it’s my first time hearing claypot beef rice. What I usually come across was the chicken version - which is pretty normal only for me. I like beef, and upon knowing that this dish is also highly recommended by this choosy makan kaki, I know I’ll have to give it a try. Why? Coz it’s so near to my campus and I hardly find nice food nearby.

Yesterday I got a sms from him, asking how was the taste. Since I haven’t paid a visit to the place yet, so I promised to go and try it that very night after class and give him my feedback then. Since sayng was back, I immediately “dated” him to go with me. And to make it merrier, I got my deary Debbie to join me as well. And when I picked them up, sayng’s buddy, whose our friend as well also joined us. So my car was full and I was the chauffeur… Picking up everyone down town then drive back to campus area again… haha. So my dear mumble friend, instead of mine, I’m giving you feedback from 3 more persons la…

Freddie & Debbie
Here’s Freddie and Debbie. I don’t have sayng’s picture on hand for the moment… so, let him be mysterious la.

When we arrived, they hanged around for some time while I was calling him to confirm the whereabout of that place. Afterall we’re settled down, we immeidately ordered our drinks with 4 claypot beef rice and 1 plate of stir-fried beef for sharing.

This is how the stall look like
This is how the stall looks like. This picture is taken from his post. I didn’t have my camera with me and we went there 9pm++ at night - it’s dark.

The claypot beef rice

The stir-fried beef
First picture is how the claypot beef rice (RM 3.50) looks like and the second one is the stir-fried beef (RM 3.00) (Pictures: Courtesy from his post).

Basically, all of us think that the meal was great and worthwhile. The rice in the claypot are evenly cooked and seasoned to taste - just nice, not too much or less. The beef on top of the rice are generally tender and juicy. The whole combination with the topped spring onion felt so welcoming and warm (actually pretty hot la…) we took some time to finish the rice, but the rice were able to maintain its warm temperature in the claypot, which is good. Debbie was the first one to finish everything (somemore with extra chili padi), as she used another plate to scoop out the rice and eat. The rest of us just ate straight from the claypot.

The stir-fried beef was… honestly not bad only. It was totally dry and lil’ crunchy. I called it ‘the fake bacon’. Fred and sayng even thought they were ‘daging salai’ (smoked beef) until they were so dry. Even the onions and veggie along the dish also ‘kering-kontang’… Ha.

One thing down in this meal was, never go with the soup given with the rice. It was superbly saltish… with plenty of Aji (MSG). The rest were alright. By looking at their menu they seemed to serve many kinda food. They even have my favourites ‘nasi goreng kampung’, but on a hotplate! Heh never come across this before… gotta try some other day la.

After finished our meal we sat there for quite a while chatting before we call the day off. From jokes, news on the paper to ghost stories… that’s how the night was spent. Fred even commented that it was one the best claypot rice he’d came across. Yeah it was indeed a good one. Will pay another visit next time!

Found out not long ago, this is gonna be my 100th post. But things here are still not so good for the moment… hoohah around and I’m always caught running like a chicken without head. Bah… But one good news yesterday - I might gonna be an aunt soon. Ooooh…? Heh. For the time being with less update, here I posted some of the photos taken during a makan trip to Muar few months back… yeah it was some time ago lah I know…

My makan kaki, Beh with his brand new Isuzu D-max. Passing by Malim primary school.

Mixed meat consist of chicken’s feet, roasted and barbequed pork with some intestines. Pretty good taste.

Oh-jien or the fried oyster. Big fat oyster and the number was quite a lot. But pity the egg and everything doesn’t taste so good together… Wasted.

Mixed wu xiang. Include Taiwanese sosage, fishball, spring roll and sliced vegetarian roasted duck meat. Not bad the try especially the spring roll.

Wan tan noodle. ‘The heaviest noodle on earth’ I guess haha. Looks nice and it taste nice too. A worthy try indeed!

Finally, a must try whenever you’re in Muar - Otak-otak. It looks so different from those we could normally find. It’s the fish flavour as the prawn flavour was finished when we’re there. It taste nice and juicy, but Beh said the prawn one it’s even nicer.
